5 Quotes for the Weird Folx

Hiya there! 👋🏽

I hope you had a great weekend and you were able to get some sunshine. I wanted to share some quotes with you, so I'll just jump right in! The first one up is from Frida Kahlo!

Frida Kahlo

I used to think I was the strangest person in the world, but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me, too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I'm here, and I’m just as strange as you.

-Frida Kahlo

I remember saying, "I'm here too!" 😖 "I'm here too!"

I also tend to imagine this person when I'm writing or creating or even when I feel a bit alone. Sometimes, I think I'm too much of something and never enough of many things. I could go on and on, but I just want to say one more time if you're out there and you feel like you're the only one who feels like the strangest, most bizarre and flawed human being...yea, I'm here too!🙋🏽‍♀️

I'll just write down what I highlighted.

As kids, we're all weird...As we get older, we realize there's a price to standing out, so we shrink form our weirdness in fear of anyone finding out who we really are. Being weird or different—even creative—should be not a source of shame or embarrassment but a torch to be held high. Weird is about the courage to be who you were born to be. Nerdy, goofy, fidgety; these are strengths. These are gifts! The things that made you weird as a kid are the source of your character and creative powers. These are the base elements of who you are. Not perfect. Not trying. Just yourself. If you hide them, you risk never knowing what you're capable of...

When you accept your weirdness and believe your gifts is when things get really weird. That's when your cause inspires others. When people see their own struggle reflected in yours, you create the potential for shared humanity. Your weirdness speaks to them. That's when you find those people who accept you precisely because your weird and different. Ultimately, you'll hear that glorious refrain: "Oh, you're weird, too? I thought I was the only one!" This is how you form relationships and businesses. This is how you find your audience.

Accept it: You're weird.😆

The things that made you weird as a kid—make you great today.🤗

For the rebels and the misfits, the black sheep and the outsiders. For the refugees, the orphans, the scapegoats, and the weirdos. For the uprooted, the abandoned, the shunned and invisible ones.

May you recognize with increasing vividness that you know what you know.

May you give up your allegiances to self-doubt, meekness, and hesitation.

May you be willing to be unlikeable, and in the process be utterly loved. (you hear that sandy!)

May you be impervious to the wrongful projections of others, and may you deliver your disagreements with grace.

May you see, with consummate clarity of nature moving through you, that your voice is not only necessary, but desperately needed to sing us out of this muddle.

May you feel shored up, supported, entwined, and reassured as you offer yourself and your gifts to the world.

May you know for certain that even as you stand by yourself, you are not alone.

Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?

-Danielle LaPorte

I'm definitely trying to remember. I'm trying to remember each day. I'm even trying to remember why I started this project in the first place. For some reason, I've been asking a lot of questions lately. The following questions came up when I was journaling today:

  • What truly matters to me?
  • Who do I wish to learn from and why?
  • Where relevant, would I be challenged artistically, intellectually, mentally , etc.?
  • What are my intentions?
  • What are my values?
  • Is what I’m engaged in aligned with my values?
  • What spaces and environments do I want to be a part of?
  • Who do I wish to build community with?
    • (equally important) Who do I not wish to build community with?
  • What do I need to let go of? Where do I need to ask for help?
  • If I had just one year to live how would I live my life? Am I doing that now? What would be different? What does that look like?
  • What would I spend more of my time doing? What would I spend less of my time doing? Who would I wish to spend more time with? With what people, places, and things do I need to cut cords with?
  • What are daily practices that are nonnegotiable that keep me grounded? (so far: prayer, meditation, specific reading, and journaling) I’m sure I’ll find more.

As you can tell, a lot of questions came up haha 😅 and I want to take this upcoming month to go hermit mode and meditate on these. I actually need to recalibrate and I'm finally taking a break! I didn't even take a break during the holidays, so it was really strange to even ask for help as I needed someone to cover my caseload. Shoutout to my best friend who held me accountable! I was going to push my break back and she was like absolutely not! I also reached out to someone to help me navigate this project. I guess I can't do it all on my own 😅 and hence I've sought advice and guidance.

Well, I'll end here for now.

But before that, I guess I'll ask you, dear fellow weird human...what made you weird as a kid that you now see as your superpowers?

I'll be waiting for the answer! Until then, may you have an awesome week! I'll be rooting for you on the other end.

(Don't worry, I'm asking myself this same question and I can see some themes and patterns throughout my life. Hope you see some too!)
